A campaign group against expansion at Heathrow Airport has warned that tax payers will pay a big price if a third runway is given the go-ahead.
The effect on schools in Hillingdon and Hounslow and the consequences of the expansion has been highlighted by the No Third Runway Action Group.
Christine Shilling, press secretary of NoTRAG has told how the schools that will need to be bulldozed to make way for the third runway and sixth terminal will be rebuilt at the expense of the tax payer.
The group has accused the government of ignoring the needs of residents and is calling on the Department of Children, Schools and Families to supply the full costs.
Heathrow Primary School, in Harmondsworth Lane will be bulldozed to make way for the third runway and many nearby schools including Harmondsworth Primary in School Road and William Byrd Primary in Victoria Lane, Harlington will have to suffer with endless aircraft noise and pollution.
Schools across the borough and in the neighbouring boroughs Hounslow, Ealing and Harrow already have to put up with loud aircraft noise, which is having an effect on their education.
Many teachers at schools under the flight path are forced to stop on occasions when the noise is too loud for them to speak over.
Ms Shilling, said: “Hillingdon and Hounslow are part of the 2M consortium adamantly opposed to Heathrow expansion and yet they have to pay the bill for rebuilding schools rendered unusable by a nearly 50 per cent increase in flights and an increase in noxious pollutants”.
NoTRAG's comments have come after a letter from the government in response to a question asked by the group's chairman Geraldine Nicholson. The response read: “It is for each local authority to make sure there are sufficient school places to meet the needs of the population and to provide good quality education in the most effective way”.
Ms Shilling, added: “The government calls the shots all round, it pretends we count but we don't.
“We don't want our schools bulldozed or rendered unusable, nor do we want to pay for replacing them.
“But continued unsustainable expansion of Heathrow will cost us our homes, our schools, our health and hit our pockets.”
Do you work or attend a school that is already affected by aircraft noise and pollution? What do you think about this and how will you cope if a third runway is given the go-ahead?
