Controversial plans to reform hospital services in Barnet could be challenged in court.
Enfield Council has sparked a judicial review of the closure of emergency services at Chase Farm Hospital, in Enfield, and the transfer of maternity services to Barnet Hospital, in Wellhouse Lane, Barnet.
Critics, including a joint committee of councillors from Barnet, Enfield and Haringey councils, are angry at the loss of hospital care in Enfield and have expressed concern that Barnet Hospital will not cope with the increased patient flow.
On Wednesday evening Enfield Council’s cabinet voted unanimously to seek a judicial review into the plans, which were drawn up by NHS authorities serving the three boroughs.
A judge will look into the reconfiguration plans to decide whether they should go ahead or be sent to the High Court, where they could be postponed indefinitely.
An initial ruling is expected in four to six months.
The reconfiguration has already faced the scrutiny of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel, a body set up to advise the Secretary of State for Health on NHS change.
Following a consultation in the three boroughs the plans were given the green light
