Jobs could be at risk in two stores in Borehamwood after Woolworths and Halfords announced they would be making job cuts across the country.

Woolworths said last Thursday it had put its retail and distribution businesses into administration. Its Borehamwood store is based in Shenley Road. Neville Kahn, at administrators Deloitte, confirmed this week the store would remain open until after Christmas and employees would still be paid.

John Gorle, at the Union of Shop, Administrative and Allied Workers (Usdaw), said: “We are continuing to be in contact with administrators. We know this is a very worrying time for staff, so we are seeking to gain assurances that staff will be paid and that their pensions will be secure.”

Car parts store Halfords announced on Wednesday that more than 200 jobs would be cut across the country. The store is based in Borehamwood Shopping Park, off Theobald Street.

A Halfords spokeswoman said: “We always strive to keep the impact on colleagues to a minimum and we have been consulting with them on proposed changes.”

Argos owner Home Retail Group announced last Friday it has bought Elstree-based electronics distributor Alba — which employs 60 people — for £15.25 million.

The takeover comes amid collapsing sales of electronics goods. An Alba spokesman said there will not be job losses. He said: “The sale will not lead to any job losses at Elstree.”

Councillor Morris Bright, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “There is a fear about losing jobs but a clearer picture will come through soon. It will be a difficult time for people, especially over the Christmas period.

“Even though it is a financially unstable time, the community needs to help support local shops and businesses.”
