A teenager from Catford has been found guilty of murdering 14-year-old David Idowu during a football match.
The 16-year-old was found guilty at Kingston Crown Court today (December 9) following a two week trial. He will be sentenced on January 16.
The court heard that David was at a football match in Tabard Street, Southwark, when he was approached by the 16-year-old.
Without warning or provocation, the youth pulled out a knife and stabbed David once, puncturing his heart.
CCTV footage showed David’s attacker laughing and smiling as he chased his victim until he collapsed.
David was taken to the Royal London Hospital by air ambulance and died three weeks later on July 7.
The 16-year-old was arrested two days later and blood spots containing David's DNA profile were found on a top he had been wearing at the time of the stabbing.
Investigating officer Detective Inspector Mick Norman said: "This has been a very tough investigation.
“Despite the fact there were a large number of eyewitnesses to the stabbing, many of whom knew the defendant, very few were prepared to name the person responsible or assist the investigation.
"However, a number of young people did come forward and this helped us identify David's attacker which proved crucial.
“I would like to thank them for doing the right thing to make sure justice was done.
"David's family have been deeply affected by his senseless murder and I hope that this verdict can bring some peace to them."
