Ten people have been arrested for drugs and guns offences in a massive police operation today to combat the spread of gun crime in north London.
500 officers raided addresses in Islington this morning, after four months of intelligence-gathering. The raids involved specialist firearms officers from Scotland Yard's SO19 branch.
A Met spokesperson said the arrests were for class-A drugs and firearms offences.
Islington Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent Barry Norman, said: "We have seen a significant increase in calls from people who have either heard what they believed to be shots fired or who have seen someone with a firearm.
"That was enough for me to set up Operation Guinevere with a dedicated team of officers. Our message to gun criminals is clear - not here, not ever."
The Evening Standard this afternoon reports that one of those arrested was a suspected Yardie gangster.
Anyone with information that would assist Operation Guinevere is asked to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 500 111.
