WALTHAM Forest had the highest number of deaths from coronary heart disease of any London borough.
Research shows that death rates in the borough among sufferers of coronary heart disease are 26 per cent higher than the average for England and Wales.
Chingford and Highams Park were the wards with the highest numbers of people suffering from coronary heart disease, angina, strokes, and high blood pressure.
These figures were recorded over 2001 to 2002.
Estimates made by health chiefs reveal that currently there are around 5,992 people living with coronary heart disease in the borough and 27,525 living with high blood pressure.
But Dr Pui-Ling Li said that by comparing these figures with national averages collected by GPs, the PCT fear they may be up to 9,000 people that are living with the condition and have not sought medical attention.
Dr Pui-Ling Li added: "We need to support GPs to pick up these patients. We are aiming to target Chingford's high rates of heart disease and admissions to hospital."
