A doorman was shot in the head outside an Enfield nightclub after an argument involving a group of men who had been refused entry.
The door supervisor at Eros in Dearsley Rd was rushed to hospital about 3am on Sunday in critical condition after being shot.
He is now undergoing surgery.
Police said four black men had tried to get into Eros about 12.40am.
However, they only had one ticket between them and, following a "20-minute conversation" with staff, they left.
Police said one of the men is thought to have threatened to shoot one of the door staff.
Detectives are especially keen to trace a dark-coloured Ford Fiesta, registration K432 DJN, with two black men inside, and the passenger possibly wearing a balaclava.
The Fiesta was following a dark coloured Peugeot 106, possibly with three black men inside, and both vehicles were seen driving away from Eros shortly after the shooting at 2.50am.
The Fiesta had been stolen from the Enfield area earlier on Saturday evening and it is still missing.
Detectives are checking CCTV images of the incident and say there have been no arrests.
Anyone who has information on the shooting should contact Operation Trident on 0208 733 4704.
