After attaining nationwide notoriety with his website advocating killing grey squirrels and eating them, an unnamed Stroud Green resident has declared a truce on the rodents.
The website featured in a number of national newspapers and was receiving hundreds of hits per day, before the married man, who goes by the name of 'Tufty', pulled the plug on the operation last week.
The web site, www.deathtothegreysquirrels.com, was set up after 'Tufty' struggled for many months to find a way to feed his garden birds, without just providing a free lunch to the squirrels instead. Information was provided on how to shoot squirrels, setting up traps, squirrel contraception and chemical repellents.
There were also squirrel recipes, so that once the animals were dead, they did not go to waste. But 'Tufty' has now been convinced to call a halt to the war after pressure from his neighbours.
A squirrel spokesman, known as Nutkin, posted a message on a Stroud Green website this week. "Dear humanoid Stroud Greeners," he wrote. "A number of local people have asked about recent hostilities between the human race and the grey squirrels in N4, and the fate of the humanoid website 'Death to Grey Squirrels'.
"This is to convey the news that an agreement has been brokered between the humans and Central Squirrel Command and a truce is now declared. The website is no more.
"In return, the squirrels have agreed not to kill baby birds, raid bird tables or dig up spring bulbs.
"We look forward to peaceful co-existence, and Tufty has gone for a long holiday on Christmas Island where he will be receiving urgent therapy."
