Historic sex guide the Kama Sutra is being published as an audio book for the first time this week.

The book, believed to have been written around 1,600 years ago, includes chapters on Sexual Union, About A Wife and About Others' Wives.

It is read by actress Tanya Franks, who plays Rainie Cross in EastEnders.

She said: "Recording the audio book was when first I realised the Kama Sutra wasn't just a sex manual but a complete philosophy - and the philosophy is a whole lot easier to get to grips with than some of the positions.

"When I was asked to read the Kama Sutra I felt nervous and excited at the thought of it. When we finally did it I was completely relaxed and we had a great time. The only thing missing was the cigarette afterwards."

The book is based on ancient Indian Hindu philosophies and was first translated into English in 1883 under the guidance of Victorian explorer Richard Burton.

Simon Petherick, from Beautiful Books, which is publishing the audio book, said: "It's the perfect meeting of ancient history and modernity. And now there's no need to feel embarrassed by reading a copy of this wonderful and important book in public - simply download it on to your MP3 player and liven up your commute to work."
