A DAY of drama in High Wycombe took a new twist last night when the railway station was evacuated due to a bomb scare.
Trains were temporarily suspended and the station cordoned off while British Transport Police and anti-terrorist officers investigated.
But it turned out to be a false alarm - when a suspect package was found to be a harmless piece of lost property.
The alert was raised on the 17.32 London-bound train from High Wycombe which was waiting at the station to pick up passengers for the trip to Marylebone.
A small, bulky package was spotted in an empty carriage by a Chiltern Railways' driver, who told his superiors.
"I reported it straight away because we just couldn't afford to take the chance," said Station Manager Narrinder Gupta.
Anti-terrorist officers were already in the town as part of an operation believed to have stopped an alleged plot to blow up aeroplanes in mid-air.
The all-clear was given just before 6.30pm after the package was found to contain just a power drill.
Peter Smith, from Marlow Road, who was waiting to collect his daughter Amy from the station, said: "It's an inconvenience you have to accept. But it's better safe than sorry."
