THE backstage bitchery and intrigue of a West End show is brought to life in Noel Coward's final play, Star Quality. The vintage comedy brings some star quality of its own when the production opens at Bromley's Churchill Theatre next week.
The cast includes Nichola McAuliffe, known for her roles in Coronation Street and Surgical Spirit, and David Griffin, famous as Hyacinth Bouquet's nervous neighbour Emmet in Keeping Up Appearances.
Also starring is Judy Buxton, who played Denis Waterman's snobbish wife in BBC comedy On The Up.
Set in the 1950s, the play goes behind the scenes of a new West End production, from the first rehearsals through to the fanfare of opening night.
Coward creates an intimate world of clashing egos, talent and treachery, with a gallery of theatrical characters including a temperamental leading lady, jaded old troupers and an innocent young playwright.
Noel Coward, born in 1899, was a prolific actor, composer, author and playwright.
His songs such as Mad About The Boy and Poor Little Rich Girl were international hits.
Several of his most popular plays were made into films, including Blithe Spirit and Private Lives.
One of his most recent and memorable film roles was criminal mastermind Mr Bridger in the 1969 action caper The Italian Job.
Coward died in 1973 at his home in Jamaica.
His Jamaican neighbour was James Bond author Ian Fleming, who approached Coward to play the villain in the film version of Dr No.
Coward's dismissive reply was: "Dr No? No no no."
Star Quality, August 21 - 26. Churchill Theatre, High Street, Bromley, tickets £20 - £24, box office 0870 0606620.
