New fears have been expressed about the impact of St George's Hospital staffing cuts on patient services.
Health scrutiny chairman Councillor Ian Hart said Wandsworth Council will now publish its own review of the cuts package which has been promoted by a fresh round of Government-imposed spending curbs.
St George's Hospital is currently in negotiation with workers over job cuts but the administering trust stresses services will not be affected negatively by the changes.
At the end of March 2006 the trust's in-year deficit stood at £11.5million compared with £21.7million 12 months before.
As well as reducing this debt, the hospital has been told to save a further £10million by the Department of Health (DoH).
Coun Hart said: "While St George's has made real efforts to avoid cutting staff who directly care for patients, I am concerned that the overall effect of the job losses will be to weaken the trust.
"I am particularly sad the hospital is proposing to do away with its midwife consultant post. This was a role created only five years ago, providing the high level of professional expertise in making maternity services more friendly and accessible."
