A POLICE sergeant has been seriously injured after being run over by a car.

Two policemen approached a parked car in the car park next to the Barge Pole pub in Harrow Manor Way, Thamesmead, on Friday night.

As they were approaching the vehicle, it sped off - colliding with both officers.

One of the officers was taken to a south London hospital while the other was treated for shock at the scene.

The injured officer is a male police sergeant, aged 43, with nine years' service, based at Bexleyheath.

He remains in hospital where he is being treated for a number of injuries including a dislocated shoulder, dislocated pelvis, broken collar bone and punctured lung.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Kurt Conroy, of Bexley CID, said: "We believe there were four people in the car, a silver grey Golf GTi. It drove off at speed and I am appealing for anyone who saw the car, either in the car park or speeding away; or anyone who might recognise the description of this car.

"At that time of night, 11pm, there would have been a significant number of people in the area, either leaving the pub next door or getting on or off buses at nearby stops.

"To drive directly at officers in that way is irresponsible to say the least. We can only be grateful that there was no loss of life.

"I am appealing urgently for information about this car and its occupants. All information passed on will be treated in the strictest confidence."

Anyone with information about the accident, should call 020 8284 9233, or to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
