Mekon is back! No, not the return of Dan Dare's melon-headed green nemesis - it's a fantastic new album from producer John Gosling.
A big beat hero and former member of Psychic TV, Gosling has only released one record in the last six years - single D-Funktional, which features Afrika Bambaataa and appears on this album - but the wait has been more than worth it.
Gosling makes up for his extended recording break with a swirling collection of menacing beats and breaks that also guest feature the drowned-out vocals of Bobby Gillespie and Alan Vega and a delicately sinister Marc Almond.
There are highlights aplenty: Boy Bitten, featuring a breathy, robotic Rita Brown, is stunning, and the grinding, stomping Yes Yes Y'all, featuring Roxanne Shante, is the coolest rap-rave track that never was.
A triumphant album with equal appeal for both hardcore fans of filthy, distorted beats and mainstream listeners who just want a good dance.
