A range of events have been organised to mark the London Week of Peace in Haringey.

The fifth annual event will run for a week from September 9, and gives residents and faith groups the chance to celebrate diversity, equality and respect.

Haringey-based charity the Peace Alliance - an independent voluntary organisation which deals with crime and the fear of crime to promote peace in the borough - launched the event in September 2001, and it is now celebrated by 23 other London boroughs.

Project manager of the Peace Alliance, Khaled Abdul-Moyeed, said: "This year we are focusing on celebrating diversity in Haringey. We have such a rich community with many different ethnic groups and cultures living side by side, so it's important to get all these groups together to celebrate this."

Events taking place include a youth talent show at the Dominion Centre, in High Road, Wood Green, on September 9 and a peace service at the New Testament Church, also in High Road, on September 10.

On September 16, there will be a peace walk from Seven Sisters to Ducketts Common in Willoughby Road, Hornsey, where the week's biggest event is due to take place - a peace festival.

The festival will include music, children's entertainment and a basketball tournament.

Tottenham Mosque, in Clyde Road, Seven Sisters, will be holding a peace service for the Muslim community on the evening of September 16, and Soka Gakkai International UK will be representing the Buddhist faith during the festival.

Mr Abdul-Moyeed said the event had been a success in the past and had helped reduce crime.

"In previous years, violent crime has dropped in Haringey during Peace Week, and figures from the Met police showed that this happened consistently, so it's not a coincidence," he said.
