Police have been given extra time to question 14 terror suspects arrested at the weekend, mostly at a Chinese Restaurant in south London.

Eleven of the men can be detained until Friday and the other three until Wednesday.

Detectives said the arrests, all on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, were not linked to the alleged plot to blow up transatlantic jets.

Twelve of the suspects were arrested at The Bridge to China Town, a halal eatery in Borough, in what officers called a "pre-planned, intelligence-led operation".

Dozens of police in riot gear stormed the full restaurant at around 10pm on Friday, when a group of about 15 men and two small boys were eating inside.

Police are still searching an Islamic school near Tunbridge Wells in connection with the arrests. The Jameah Islameah school in Mark Cross, near Crowborough - a facility for boys aged 11 and 16 - had only nine pupils at the time of its last inspection.

Homes in south, east and north London were also raided.

The raids followed "many months of surveillance and investigation", a Met spokesman said.

The suspects are in custody at the high security Paddington Green police station in central London.
