Those who only associate army bands with military music would have changed their minds if they had been lucky enough to watch Rhythm Force at Kneller Hall, Whitton on Thursday.

The Corps of Army Music wowed a delighted audience at the outdoor music festival with a mixture of rock, pop and jazz. It was mind blowing stuff as those serving in some of the army's 24 regular bands showed just how talented and versatile they are.

People were dancing in the isles to The Funky Cats, Droothey Neebours, Mind 'N' Soul, Haiverin' Gadgies, Live Wire, Blarney Boys and the wonderful Army Big Band.

The bands played hits from The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs and Robbie Williams to name a few, and it was an uplighting experience, especially when the Army Big Band performed Glen Miller style.

A great evening finished with the crooning of 19-year-old singing sensation Peter Grant. Peter has been signing since he was six and performing at workingmen's clubs from the age of 13. His debut album includes songs from Barry White, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darren, Lennon /McCartney, and Scott Walker. A new album has just been released and should prove another hit.

The Army is the largest employer of musicians in the country. Entry is from 16-37, and can offer a music bursary for a performance based degree course. For details visit www.armymusician.mod.uk

Rhythm Force was certainly a powerful recruiting vehicle!
