An investigation is underway into a sick new twist on the happy slapping craze which involves youths setting pitbulls on cats and filming the attack.
Enfield police are looking into an allegation that a gang of three youths filmed a pitbull savaging a cat in the Enfield Island Village area.
It is feared the dog is being let loose in the neighbourhood.
Police have also received reports cats have been mauled in nearby Warwick Road and Ordnance Road.
The issue surrounding dangerous dogs was raised at an Enfield Lock consultation meeting attended by residents on Monday night.
Sgt Richard Whitehouse of the Enfield Lock Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) said officers would investigate any allegations.
He said: "We are keen to get to the bottom of this issue.
"It is a criminal offence to have a dangerous dog out of control, and we would advise residents to contact us if they have evidence dogs are being set on cats in the area."
He warned: "Dogs such as pitbulls are unpredictable creatures. They could turn on a human as easily as a cat.
"So, if there are gangs of children taking part in any alleged activity, they are putting themselves in danger."
Beth Pedder, secretary of Enfield Action Lock Action Group Asscociation said the group was horrified'.
She said: "Residents have to start being pro-active and report any such incidents immediately.
"If they can safely take a picture to gather evidence, then do so. Somebody knows where those people responsible live."
An RSPCA spokeswoman said it had been investigating similar allegations in the north London area.
She said: "This kind of behaviour is going on in London, and a number of incidents have been brought to our attention.
"Teenagers are using the dogs as weapons, to show their power and intimidate others, with youths keeping the dogs by their sides when they steal a mobile phone.
She added: "We will not hesitate to prosecute offenders, who can face a six-month jail term and a lifetime ban on keeping animals."
