Two Pinner schools will be combined at the start of next year after a decision by a Government adjudicator.

Harrow Council wants to amalgamate West Lodge First and Middle Schools but the proposal has proved controversial, with opposition from middle school governors and objections from some residents.

An independent adjudicator, whose job it is to settle disputes, has ruled in favour of the scheme, saying it will improve education and allow better use of resources.

The council, which has always claimed to have the support of parents, is now saying the schools will re-open as one on January 1, 2009.

Councillor Christine Bednell, responsible for children's services, said: “I am pleased that the matter is now resolved and the way forward is clear. “The proposal has attracted huge interest among the school community, and I am very aware of the strong and diverse views that have been expressed over the months.

“There is now the opportunity for a new start to be made, drawing on the combined resources of these two good schools.”

She said the council will do all it can to help parents, pupils, staff and governors.

The decision will end a period of uncertainty for both schools, with the middle school having been without a permanent head since April 2007.
