Sutton students proved their academic excellence last week by turning in another above average performance in their A-levels.

The results, which were delivered to thousands of nervous youngsters last Thursday, amounted to a borough average of 97 per cent and surpassed the national figure by 0.4 per cent.

Wilson's School and Sutton High School reported a 100 per cent pass rate and the majority of the other schools in the borough were within five per cent behind them.

Tony Brett Young, lead councillor for education, said: "I would like to offer my congratulations to these young people who have worked extremely hard to achieve good grades.

"Taking A-levels is a very stressful time, but I am sure that their schooling in Sutton has equipped them well for the academic and professional challenges ahead."

While most schools have maintained their high pass rate since 2005, Carshalton Boys' Sports College has reported a significant increase.

In comparison to last year's result, the pass rate has risen by 12 per cent with 80 per cent of the pupils gaining A-levels last week.

Headteacher Simon Barber said: "These are really pleasing results showing continued improvement and reflecting the hard work of both the boys and the staff."

Several students received outstanding results which will allow them to study at the university of their choice.

Wilson's star pupil was William Norris who was awarded seven As and one AS level and has been accepted to read science at Cambridge University.

Wallington County Grammar School student Simon Xu achieved six As and 17 pupils in total received four As in their results.

Headteacher Dr Martin Haworth said: "These are extremely good results, up to our usual standard with some brilliant individual results. A dozen boys have won places at Oxford or Cambridge."

Teachers across Sutton have praised students for their hard work and congratulated them on their success.

Headteacher of Sutton High School Stephen Callaghan said: "We are delighted with these A-level results for the school.

"Many of the girls have been with us from the age of four. We have seen them grow and develop through the years and it is wonderful to see them fulfil their potential so successfully."

Having achieved such impressive grades, the future is bright for the young people of Sutton.

Jo Pomeroy, deputy headteacher at Nonsuch High School for Girls, said: "We are delighted with the results of our year 13 students this summer in both the A-level and the Advanced Extension Awards. Students have secured places at our most prestigious universities on a wide range of courses.

"Eleven students have been accepted to read medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that 15 of this cohort have secured Oxbridge places."
