On the 24th of October we all suffered a great loss. James Michael Tyler, a well-loved actor, died of prostate cancer, he passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Tyler was diagnosed with an advanced form of prostate cancer in September 2018. He kept it a secret for around 3 years before revealing it to the public. In an interview back in June, he informed everyone that the cancer was normally fairy simple to treat with medication, but it spread to his bones, sadly leading it to paralyse the lower part of his body. He explained to us that the cancer mutated at the time of the pandemic. This was a big shock to everyone. James Michael Tyler spent 10 years as playing the role of Gunther in a show that we all know and love. “The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh friend), from the hits series Friends, but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband,” said Toni Benson, his manager. “If you met him once, you’ve made a friend for life.” James Michael Tyler died at 59 years old, such a young age yet he still managed to do so much with his life. Once Friends had come to an end, Tyler appeared on a TV series called Scrubs as well as appearing on a show called Modern Music. Earlier on in his life he also appeared on a show called Sabrina the teenage witch. Tyler also wanted to raise awareness for cancer, he gave a spoken word performance of the Stephan Kalinich poem “If You Knew” to raise awareness of prostate cancer. He brought happiness to people, through the TV show, through being a friend, through being a colleague and most importantly through being a loving husband.
