Boris Johnson will be "talking up British fashion" at a glitzy dinner in New York City.

The Mayor of London will rub shoulders with key players in the industry as he continues his US trade mission.

But the six day East Coast tour was hit by more scheduling disruption when a planned meeting with Bill de Blasio was called off because the New York mayor is ill.

Mr Johnson was forced to significantly change his agenda for the first leg of his visit after Boston was hit by unprecedented levels of snow. But he insisted meetings with all the "key people " had still taken place.

He said: "I think we achieved all targets."

Mr Johnson will head to the Barclays-sponsored British Fashion Council dinner to promote "huge exports" of UK goods, including "lovely macintoshes, cami knickers and leather goods".

He said: "The crucial thing about this trip is it's playing to our massive strengths."

Asked about criticism over the number of overseas visits he has recently made, he replied: "It's just part of the job to sell London abroad, it's vital to do it, absolutely vital."

He added: "We are already huge here and the key thing is never to be complacent and to keep banging the message home about the attractions of London."

After arriving in New York, Mr Johnson had lunch with former city mayor Michael Bloomberg, who lavished praise on his London visitor.

"We have been friends for a long time now and I have nothing but respect for what he has done," Mr Bloomberg said. "It will be very tough to find somebody as competent as Boris (to replace him as mayor).

"He not only has the intellect, he has the personality. He understands how to excite people and get them proud of where they are and what they are. "
