Everyone loves a trip to the cinema, being able to relax and enjoy all sorts of movies. Once in a while however it is a treat to leave the standard high street fayre behind and to try something a little different to the national cinema chains. An independent cinema could be perfect for some variety or if you want to take a step back in time yet still enjoy all your favourite films!
Recently I discovered one such cinema. The Castle Cinema is located in Clapton and is an independent, crowd funding cinema showing a variety of new release films. It was originally called the Castle Electric Theatre and originally opened on the 8th of September 1913. It ran in its original form until 1958, later becoming a bingo hall. Having ceased to be a cinema for a while part of the original building was recently refurbished and turned into the current cinema with the original details of its intimate, ornate plasterwork still being there today.
The cinema has two screens and a café and bar perfect for a pre-film drink or snack! This area is also open to any members of the public wishing to visit without watching anything. On my recent visit, we arrived early and were greeted by welcoming, friendly staff. There was a variety of cakes and pastries as well as hot, soft and alcoholic drinks, one or two of which we enjoyed on the comfortable seating that was available.
The movie was a treat and it was a pleasure to watch in such a marvellous environment. We will definitely be back.
If you are able to visit in the next week or so you can help them celebrate their fifth birthday following reopening.
