Dean Brennan insisted his Barnet side’s performance in Saturday’s 7-0 drubbing of Tamworth was no different to the standards they have been playing at all season long.

The Bees raced into a four-goal lead at half-time before finishing the job with three second-half strikes to record the club’s biggest ever win under Brennan, sending them up to third in the National League table.

“I didn’t want a response from Monday. That’s the standard we’ve been playing at in every game,” said Brennan when asked if he was looking for a reaction from his side following the bank holiday defeat at Maidenhead.

“I mean, loads of chances. I think what’s important is that standards are there to be adhered to, and I just thought at times against Maidenhead on Monday we created enough chances to win two games.

“We were a little bit sloppy in our defending, but on several occasions today we were a little bit sloppy at times as well - they had a couple of good chances before half-time and a good chance at the end, which would have killed our clean sheet.

“But the players’ attitudes have been spot on. I can’t question them. I know the performance levels have been very high. We now find ourselves on two points per game after six games, and we find ourselves plus six (goal difference).

"I still personally believe we should be on more. I don’t want to keep harping on about that. All in all, it’s a fantastic day for everybody. To win 7-0 in this division is never easy, and I think we’ve all got to enjoy it - especially our supporters.”

Despite inflicting such a heavy defeat on Tamworth, Brennan suggested his side could have been even more ruthless in front of goal, lauding the efforts of Zak Brunt for his hat-trick on the day.

“I think we could've scored more. I don’t want to be disrespectful to the opposition, but I know how hard it is,” said Brennan.

“I’ve been here before. I've gone to Wrexham and lost by six. I’ve been to Dagenham and been 5-0 down, and I had a much lesser group of players, so I know how hard it is coming up.

“I think they (Tamworth) have done brilliant to come up and do what they’ve done over the last two years. When you get up to this division - they were in every game for the first five games - we knew how important it was today to come back on our pitch.

"It was very sticky in the first half, but it was slicker in the second half. That made us score more goals, basically.

“A special mention for me is for Brunty. His attitude, his application. Everyone knows I love him, and I said this when he scored his goal against Forest Green. We worked on it; we watched videos together. He loves the game.

"That’s why he’s so infectious. If he scores goals, he will go on and have a proper career in the game, and he’s starting to do that now.”

Barnet make the long trip to Gateshead on Saturday, then host Altrincham on Tuesday.
