Crystal Palace claimed their first point at home in the Women's Super League sharing the spoils with relegation rivals Everton.
Adjusting to the top flight, Eagles boss Laura Kaminski has consistently described Palace's first Super League campaign as a "transition season."
At the bottom end of the WSL, the South London club is essentially in a 'mini-league' alongside Everton, West Ham, Aston Villa and Leicester.
Currently, Palace are showing all the right signs to remain in the division, picking up an unexpected but deserved draw away to Liverpool while recording four points against the two sides they have played in their 'mini-league'.
Match Action
Palace perfectly began their six-pointer at Gander Green Lane, taking the lead in less than a minute. Kaminski's side started on the front foot and pressed well. My Cato stole possession 30 yards from goal and carried the ball into the penalty area. Unmarked in the middle of the box was Indiah Paige-Riley, Cato found the attacker who took a touch and rolled her left-footed effort into the bottom corner.
The Toffees almost responded instantly when Honoka Hayashi's deflected effort from the edge of the box struck the crossbar. From that point on, however, it was all Palace. Their football was controlled and tidy as they limited the visitors to just two shots in the first half.
Making just her third league start of the season, Dutch winger Ashleigh Weerden was impressing on the left, providing pace and directness in attack.
Palace were dominant in the first half and regularly progressed into good areas, albeit clear-cut chances were few and far between.
Attempting to turn the affair around, the visitors grew into the second half. After failing to register a shot on target for over 70 minutes, things clicked for Everton. Hayashi received the ball in the middle of the park and shifted it out to the right. The Japanese midfielder galloped into the box, but Palace failed to pick her up, Sarri delivered a pinpoint cross and Hayashi guided a wonderful header into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, Everton registered their second shot on target, with substitute Melissa Lawley forcing a critical smothering save from Shae Yanez. Brian Sørensen's side had started to weather the storm, with Palace struggling to navigate out of a difficult spell.
Following an arduous ten minutes of Everton control, Palace built an exquisite attack, almost edging back in front. The Eagles broke at pace; a cross was launched in from the right wing towards Katie Stengel. Palace's American struggled to connect with the cross, but it fell to Shanade Hopcroft, who got a brilliant strike away with Courtney Brosnan producing an excellent save to deny Kaminski's side a winner.
Palace sit ninth in the WSL, two points clear of bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa. In the league, crucial matches against the Villans and West Ham are next on the horizon.
