Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has suggested that Adam Wharton could need surgery on his groin.
Wharton, 20, did not report to the England U21 camp during the November international break due to his long-standing injury. After undergoing further medical assessment last week, the midfielder will likely face surgery in the long term.
Currently, Wharton is reliant on painkillers to get through games and has racked up 558 minutes of football this season.
Despite surgery seeming the probable course of action, Glasner admitted that the midfielder is available for Monday's game against Nottingham Forest.
“Yes, he’s ready for Monday. But it is always the same: we have to manage him. He saw another specialist, and it is always an up-and-down. He’s trained quite well this week, so he’s available and okay.
Wharton's injury troubles have seen him hobble through games this term - his rather disheartened boss acknowledged that surgery has become an ever-prominent prospect.
“The injury does not look like it will disappear. We are looking for the right moment for the right break. I looked at the schedule and didn’t find a break. I’m used to having a break around Christmas, but it is the busiest time here.
“We will see. As long as he can deal with his problems and the pain especially, we will try to keep it as it is.
“When it gets worse, maybe he will need a longer break and surgery.
“I don’t want to talk in detail. It’s not about giving him a two, three, four-week break; it’s about having surgery or not. That’s the question we have to answer.”
Besides divulging Wharton's condition, Glasner confirmed that the Eagles have no new injury concerns ahead of their trip to the City Ground on Monday. Wing-back Daniel Munoz is back in line to start after limping off against Liverpool.
