What is the history behind this day?
Before understanding the role of this vital day, we need to travel back to 1948 when the WHO was first established and then the first World health day was celebrated on the 7th April of 1949. At the united nations conference, it was discussed to dedicate an organisation to bring about awareness of global health issues. However it isn't only just a day that should be dedicated, every day should be taken as an opportunity to bring awareness so we can eliminate inequality.
World Health Day is celebrated on the 7th of April of each year. It is a global health awareness day and it allows for people to recognise ongoing health issues that are amongst people globally. This year the WHO has stressed the need to make our planet much healthier and liveable for each and every one of us. Statistics show that almost 13 million deaths can be avoided if we make the simplest change to our lives, now that is a pretty high figure and if it is possible to make the most of your time with your loved ones, why not?
Now for instance the coronavirus pandemic definitely highlighted the inequalities in society and many people struggled but when you look back to when the pandemic started, we saw humanity realising the need to take care of one another. Amidst this pandemic, climate change became a crisis and yet poses a serious threat to our planet hence diseases such as asthma, heart disease and etc are increasing expeditiously. Therefore the theme for world health day this year is "Our Planet, Our Health".
