Charlton Athletic secured a 2-1 victory over Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night at the Valley. With an early goal for Cheltenham from Will Goodwin, the Addicks soon equalised with a penalty scored by Alfie May. A slow second half followed, with many missed opportunities from both sides. The night came to an end with Alfie May’s second penalty.

Failing to secure any points, Cheltenham sit at the bottom of the league table. Charlton secured 10th, with 4 points from two games. The two teams met yesterday at the Valley for the 6th time, alongside high hopes from Charlton to gain their first victory over Cheltenham. Maintaining their unbeaten run throughout November, Charlton continue to work towards their play-off hopes.

An early goal from Will Goodwin started the night on Tuesday. In the 10th minute, Goodwin scored a header with an excellent delivery from Liam Sercombe. With Miles Leaburn going down in the 15th minute due to Freestone’s challenge, the Addicks secured a penalty for a chance to equalise. Alfie May scored his 16th goal of the season, in the 16th minute of the game. With momentum high, Charlton fought to gain the lead throughout the rest of the first half. The second half opened with both teams eager to take the lead. Further wasted chances and bookings proceeded, until Bevan’s handball. Alfie May stepped up to take the second penalty for Charlton of the night, and led his team to victory.

Alfie May scored twice on Tuesday against his former club, Cheltenham. In July 2023, he signed for Charlton and has scored 17 goals so far this season. Being top goal scorer in League One at present, May has been a crucial part of the team.

With a total attendance of 10,622, 287 Cheltenham fans made the trip to the Valley on Tuesday night. Looking ahead to their clash against Bristol Rovers on Saturday 9th December, Cheltenham will be working towards easing out of the relegation zone. Charlton, on the other hand, will face Gillingham in the second round of the FA cup on Saturday. 

Overall, it proved to be a challenge for Charlton on Tuesday night, as they fought to break Cheltenham’s defence. Will they be able to continue this unbeaten run and climb their way up the league table?
