Divorced, beheaded, and died. Divorced beheaded survived. Six the musical is based on the lives of Henry XIII’s wives and is revolutionary. Despite the pandemic, has taken the world by storm winning awards all over the world and having many tours.
Premiered in 2017, SIX was written by two university students, Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow, and originally performed by other students! Subsequently, Lucy Moss became the youngest female director to direct a musical on Broadway.
The characters are Henry XIII’s six wives, all based of real artists:
Catherine Howard – Beyoncé
Anne Boleyn – Avril Lavigne, Miley Cirus
Jane Seymour – Adele, Sia
Anne of Cleeves – Rihanna, Nicki Minaj
Catherine Howard – Ariana Grande, Britney Spears
Catherine Parr – Alicia Keys
Lucy Moss says, “Slide right out of my D-Ms, hit me up again into my dre-ams,” is one of her favourites and although it technically doesn’t rhyme, she likes it because it “make us laugh because it is stupid.” As a result, the show is known for its silly jokes and quirky lines.
The production features six singers, representing the six wives, as they compete for who suffered most by their husband. However, at the end they come together and celebrate themselves apart from their husband, ‘we’re one of a kind, no category,’ sending a clear message of celebration of differences and having fun.
The show has done amazingly since its premier, with producers claiming its success on the price of tickets and its widespread popularity. As the cast number is low, tickets are cheaper making it more accessible to more people. Likewise, the show is modernistic and speaks to its modern audience. The show is widely revered and, having watched it personally, I must say it is a must-see.
SIX is revolutionary because it combines a concert-like show with the traditional theatre setting. This makes it more accessible for modern viewers and lures people into the world of theatre. It includes different genres of music and unlike some musicals, it isn’t boring! But one thing is for certain, there's nothing like it.
