Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers, has exacted revenge on the Supreme Intelligence after reclaiming her identity from the despotic Kree. However, as a result of unforeseen events, Carol is left to bear the weight of an unstable universe. Her powers become entangled with those of Jersey City superfan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau, when her duties take her to an anomalous wormhole connected to a Kree revolutionary. To save the universe, this unlikely trio will need to come together and learn how to cooperate.
The Marvels" is part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it connects with other MCU films and series. Starring Brie Larson reprising her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Iman Vellani, who plays Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel," is also expected to be part of "The Marvels.", Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau in the Disney+ series "WandaVision," is featured in the movie.
To tell you the truth, seeing the reviews for the movie beforehand didn’t give me high expectations for the movie itself but to tell you the truth, I was disappointed – not with the movie itself but to the people who rated the movie. Iman Vellani had an absolutely brilliant performance and I cannot express this enough, the chemistry the three of them had was phenomenal and it worked extremely well to mask up most of the bad writing of the movie. Additionally, as much as I adore Brie Larson, I could not feel what she was trying to execute across the screen. I felt that Ms. Marvel was the highlight of this film and Kamala Khan carried the movie, this wouldn’t have been as enjoyable if she were not there, Imani Vellani definitely did not disappoint.
As much as I enjoyed the movie, it was not without flaws – I was especially let down by the villain, although I do sympathise with her goals and what she was trying to achieve; I felt that she was quite a one-dimensional character. I felt like they haven’t emphasised her and she felt lacking as a character. I couldn't sympathise fully with her and if you asked me her name for a thousand pounds I fear I wouldn’t be able to answer. There were some parts where I cringed; the musical planet segment of the movie made me want to hide my face in embarrassment but Park Seo-joon playing Prince Yan saved the day. I was quite surprised with his appearance since it completely slipped my mind that he made an appearance in the movie. As someone who grew up watching k-dramas, his global debut made me especially excited but I expected him to have more minutes of screen-time which was quite disappointing.
The mid-credits scene had me flabbergasted, *spoilers* X-men finally getting introduced to the MCU makes me excited and curious on how they would execute this, but since I haven't been a big fan of any recent releases, it's becoming harder and harder for me to get excited about any upcoming movies. Overall, the movie wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be and one of the main reasons I watched the movie was to see Iman Vellani’s performance and to see Brie Larson which definitely left me satisfied. The writing? Not very much so.
