This Christmas season, it's important to think about how we can give not only gifts, but also our time and goodwill. There are so many ways to make a difference, and here are just a few ideas to help you give back this holiday season.

1. Volunteer at a local homeless shelter/soup kitchen

This time of year can be especially difficult for homeless people, as the weather worsens, they often face extreme cold, loneliness and hunger and many struggle to survive the winter months. Volunteering can help to alleviate some of these hardships and provide much-needed company and support. Your time and effort can make a real difference in the lives of those in need and help to spread the spirit of generosity and goodwill during the holiday season.

2. Visit a nursing home

Another group often affected during this season is the elderly. For most people, Christmas is a time to relax and celebrate with friends and family, however for many elderly people it can be one of the most lonely times of the year. Visiting a care home and spending time with the residents is an easy way to make a positive difference, and the elderly residents are sure to appreciate the company and your thoughtfulness. Your visit could also be a great experience for you too, allowing you to spend time with someone from a different generation and learn about their life experiences.

3. WWF's "Adopt an Animal" Feature

Gift-giving at Christmas is a popular tradition, but with so many material items filling the streets, can we truly say that any of them are meaningful or lasting? WWF's Adopt an Animal programme is a unique and fun Christmas gift that makes a real difference for the environment and endangered species. By symbolically adopting an animal WWF is able to provide resources which these species need to thrive and reproduce including food, water and medical care, you also receive a cuddly toy, a photo and profile of your new animal, and regular updates on their conservation. It is not only a fun and unique gift but one that will last beyond the holidays.

4. Reach out to people you know

We all have people in our lives who may not be obviously struggling this Christmas, but could equally use our love and support. It may be a co-worker who is away from home or elderly neighbour spending Christmas alone. These are the kinds of people who may be struggling more than we know. This Christmas, why not reach out? Whether it's by inviting them over for a nice roast dinner or suggesting going gift shopping together, even a Christmas card can go a long way to showing your support and helping them feel more included during this special time of year.
