Many communities across the world gathered together on the 1st of December to mark the beginning of the festive season and countdown to Christmas. They spread festive cheer through their communities in a time of struggle and hardship, and in the community of South Woodford, people from all different backgrounds gathered together to see the Christmas tree light up under a dark winter’s night.

The event, which was organized significantly by the volunteer group The South Woodford Society”, started around 4pm with carols sung by local schoolchildren and the sound of music echoed throughout the local high street by the accompanying brass ensemble from “Redbridge Music Lounge”. There was a meet and greet with Santa and glow sticks provided which were a hit for the younger children, and there were also sweet treats and mulled wine which the adults could not resist!

Around 4:30, the lights were turned on following a countdown by the Mayor of Redbridge, Councillor Jyotsna Islam. Earlier, the mayor commented that the event brought “different communities into cohesion”, and “shared the joy of Christmas” for adults and children alike, as well as people of different religions. She also further praised the South Woodford Society for their volunteering effort in order to organize the event and that “it is a community initiative, and the council are there to support them”. Councillor Lloyd Duddridge who is the Redbridge Council Cabinet Minister for Children, Young People and Education stated that “these sorts of event bring people together, [he] thinks we need as many of those as possible”.

The council are starting to invest in events like these with Christmas tree Lights going up in Ilford, Barkingside, Wanstead and in various other locations across the borough. But the event in South Woodford was mostly organized by the South Woodford Society who hold many events throughout the year to help benefit the local community. Local volunteer Trisha told me about events that the Society organizes “that help us take care of the environment like the Urban Orchards and gardening” which are all organized by volunteers.

So, if you are already looking for festive plans for next year, make sure to add this joyful event to your wish list and also have a look online for the South Woodford Society and their events throughout the year for a bit of family fun that benefits the local community as well!
