A local independent girls school, St Catherine’s in Twickenham, recently dedicated a week to honour the diversity within their community. As the school celebrated their second annual ‘Unity Week’, the pupils enthusiastically enjoyed the many activities on offer.

The week began with an enlightening talk by Darren Edwards (disabled adventurer and inspirational speaker) who was greatly appreciated by all pupils. Throughout the week, the girls got involved in many events, some favourites included: Bollywood and Afrobeat dancing, talks from a local Rabbi and a Ukrainian folk music workshop.

As per St Catherine’s tradition, the week came to a close with a fair to celebrate the diverse faiths and cultures in the school. The beauty of this event was highlighted through the effort every pupil put into making a special afternoon; every stall was student run! The result was a colourful festival full of food, music, and dance from across the world.

Sixth former, Martha Collyer-Hamlin commented: “My favourite aspect of Unity Week was seeing an abundance of different cultures being celebrated during the fair as it was so interesting to learn about everyone’s different backgrounds.”

St Catherine’s’ celebration of the diversity within their community is a wonderful example of how to appreciate everyone’s own individuality and bring together all cultures and faiths.
