Heathers, written by Lawrence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy, was based on a film written by Daniel Waters. The film was released in 1989, so the fact that you can still go and see the musical version in Richmond Theatre today is a testament to its witty originality. Heathers the musical is on at Richmond Theatre from the 8-12th of October, and I attended it’s opening night. It was fantastic, with Jenna Innes (playing Victoria Sawyer) showcasing her incredible singing range, while playing the character convincingly. In fact, every single actor on that stage was an incredible singer, from Amy Miles (playing Martha Dunnstock)’s touching performance of ‘Kindergarten Boyfriend’ to Esme Bowdler, Sedona Sky and Daisy Twells’( The Heathers) iconic performance of ‘Candy Store’. This musical was a vibrant, darkly comedic spectacle that captured the attention of every single person in the audience. Its simple but effective set was ingenious, and added to the overall high quality of the show. Siyana Virdi, a sixth former who watched the show said ‘I’ve never seen anything like it! It was so engaging, I can’t recommend it enough.’ When the show finished, the audience erupted into applause, reflecting how everyone had just had a thoroughly good time. It was quite the event, with some girls even dressed in costume, as the Heathers. The show ran for 2 hours and 30 minutes including the interval. It explores high school issues, like fitting in and bullies in a dark, but catchy way, with the songs all packing a punch. Isla Hiscott, another audience member said ‘It explores such a universal theme in such a different and engaging way, I thought it would just be your typical high school drama, but it is definitely not!’ Clearly, Heathers the musical leaves a lasting impression on all who watch it, and I thoroughly recommend it! Heathers ultimately reminds us that high school is a battlefield, but we can all use a bit of ‘Big Fun’ to get us through it!
