At the end of September, members of Poindextor explorer scout group took part in ‘Sky Camp’, a competition where they had to build, sleep and cook food on a platform constructed in the trees.

Taking place in the woods at Paccar Scout Camp, the platforms had to be constructed from materials such as wooden poles, ropes, nets and tarpaulins.

Participants slept in hammocks, which were suspended between the trees.

Every team competing had to have a theme, as well as food and a menu for the weekend.

Teams from Poindextor had a variety of different themes, including a team themed on the Despicable Me film series and a team themed on the pub company Wetherspoons.

Teams also decorated their platforms with items related to their themes.

Both the food and the theme were judged by the staff at Paccar Scout camp who ran the competition.

An Explorer scout, Xavier Ward said “I had a great time at Sky Camp and building the platform was a fun challenge to do with my friends”.

Points were awarded by staff to the teams based on how well their platforms were constructed and how nice their food was.

Throughout the weekend, to earn extra points, teams could complete optional challenges, which involved completing tasks such as tying a monkey’s fist knot.

At the end of the camp, the platforms had to be taken down with all rubbish removed, in order to preserve the woodland.

Once the points had been added up, the Wetherspoons team from Poindextor managed to achieve second place in the Sky Camp competition.
