Whether it is to satisfy a craving, or experience Indian cuisine for the first time, Kanteen is the place for you.

Despite the countless cuisines across the globe, Indian cuisine stands out especially, due to its dozens of subcategories within the umbrella of ‘Indian food.’

Indian food, despite its widespread popularity, is extremely hard to be made to perfection, as recipes vary from home to home, and due to the various strong spices and flavours involved, it can be hard to make a uniformly appetizing dish for all taste preferences.

However, one restaurant in Sutton is not far from perfect.

Kanteen is an Indian restaurant in Wallington -185 Stafford Road, SM6 9BT - which has recently established itself as a prominent local restaurant.

The ‘Bhel Puri’ (a renowned dish from North India consisting of puffed rice, tamarind and spices) was oozing in tangy flavour with every bite and the special ‘Masala Naan’ paired with the ‘Dal’ (lentil curry) was delectable, melting in your mouth into a substance of pure relish.

One customer, while enjoying the creamy chicken and chicken tikka, said,

The food has an amazingly rich taste – it is so good.

“It’s not too spicy or strong; the food here is for everyone, no matter your preferences.

“Kanteen definitely deserves more recognition.”

Whilst the menu includes several types of food, it predominantly consists of North Indian cuisine.

The restaurant itself has a peaceful ambience, with a rustic theme, full of vintage Indian art and ‘Bollywood’ posters on the walls, decorations made of recycled pallet wood and bamboo on the ceiling, transporting the customer from Wallington to the streets and homes of North India.

The owner and chef, Mr. Kulwant Singh is deeply passionate about his dishes, carefully crafting a menu which encapsulates North India and the food items which he grew up with.

Mr. Singh said,

Our food is inspired by ‘Dhaba,’ which means ‘roadside eatery’ in Hindi, where travelers and lorry drivers would visit.

“I want to create the same vibe as a ‘Dhaba.’

“I would recommend customers to buy the ‘Champaran’ Chicken Curry, which is a Chicken Curry cooked in mustard oil with a lot of onion and garlic.

“I grew up eating this in the Northeastern part of India; Champaran is a place in an Indian state called Bihar.”

The only aspect of this restaurant which perhaps supersedes the food is the staff, who were very warm and welcoming and regularly ensured that everyone’s meals were perfect.

For delicious food, extremely hospitable staff and an amazing atmosphere, head to Kanteen the next time you are in South London.
