Thomas Partey, starting as a CDM, finishing as a RB, played a crucial role in ensuring Arsenal secured their second win in the Champions League this season as they beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in a tight, cagey affair.

Arsenal started the first half on the front foot, creating a few chances.

However, their domination wasn’t just because of their composed style of play on the ball.

The work out of possession was crucial, with Partey particularly impressing.

He wasn’t scared to follow his man short as he attempted to receive from his keeper and was rewarded as he won the ball back multiple times.

His ability to anticipate and occupy the space from goal kicks was excellent.

Shakhtar’s continuous attempts to play out from the back were fruitless as Arsenal were dominant in central areas which ultimately led to chances for Trossard, Martinelli and Havertz who were unable to convert until the 29th minute when a shot from Gabriel Martinelli hit the post and keeper’s back, resulting in Arsenal taking the lead through an own goal.

Towards the end of the second half, Shakhtar started to enjoy some more possession but the lack of movement from their midfield, meant Partey and Rice could stop them playing on the half turn.

Heading into the second half, Partey was moved to right back as Ben White, on a yellow card, was taken off for Mikel Merino who moved into midfield.

Partey was tasked with keeping the dangerous Eguinaldo quiet - Shakhtar’s best player of the first half.

Partey did a good job in keeping him quiet but it wasn’t a standout half from him like the first.

Despite this, what was most impressive about this half was his versatility and commitment to playing for the team, away from his usual position he put in such a solid shift, one could think he was a right back.

Partey’s 4 ball recoveries and 2 tackles helped ensure Arsenal got 3 points, continuing their unbeaten Champions League run.

Next up is Liverpool on Sunday where Partey is expected to play in midfield again, despite more appearances for Merino.

Let’s just hope he can put in another dominant display.
