Cancer is proven to affect one out of two of us in a lifetime which encapsulates why it is paramount that collectively we provide the support to end it.

As most of us are aware, Cancer Research is a charity that aims to provide support, aid and understanding into the scientific as well as social background of the disease itself, cancer.

The Shine Night Walk that annually takes place aims to raise funding in order to provide for the scientific research and development of cancer.

Whilst cruising on their journey throughout Westminster, Nuno Rodrigues stated "With 1 in 2 of us affected by cancer, I am personally determined to help change these shocking statistics."

These motivating and moving words encourage us who have been in similar shoes or who are watching from the guidelines to acknowledge that, if it has not already, cancer will almost certainly affect us personally at one point in life.

As difficult as this is to comprehend, this disease is so agonisingly fast spreading and persistent which unfortunately go hand in hand to tear lives apart.

Hence why it is imperative that we take action against cancer to address this determined public health issue.

Another walker, Sandra Fugaccia, expressed her feelings about the matter, she stated "I attended the walk, in addition to my family, in support of my father who unfortunately had a long and excruciating battle with lung cancer and eventually passed in 2023.

My father was always a bubbly character who never failed to make so much as a stranger laugh yet his battle with cancer took this from him.

Just like many others, although we tried to uplift his spirit, he was robbed of his livelihood as we had to sit back and allow cancer to take its course.

After my family and I being left distraught over our loss, this year we signed up for the Shine Night Walk, it was my first time attending however my family had attended over the span of a few years.

To acknowledge that an astonishing amount of around £2.7 million was raised that day with civilians doing a range of walks from 10km to a full marathon is beyond belief.

Together, with support and spreading awareness, we can beat cancer."

This share of a personal experience allows us to have insight into a truly deep moment that changed someone's life and future forever.

Thus, we must act against cancer in order to beat it.
