On Thursday the 24th October, 31 students at Parmiter’s School across years 7 to 13 performed in a special evening, jam-packed with a vast selection of songs and piano music.
This informal concert is known as Parmiter’s Singers and Pianists Recital, and it is known to shine a spotlight on some sensational solos (coupled with duets and even a trio of singers) as opposed to large ensembles that would normally be seen and heard in concerts, such as orchestras and concert bands.
It also provides the opportunity for each student to play in a relaxed environment, giving the chance to perform with their heart and soul, as well as tell a story with a piece that they personally enjoy.
Commencing just before 7 pm in a packed music room, the audience immediately became immersed into an exciting musical journey, with performances being introduced enthusiastically by each student: from anthems of the iconic musical Oliver; to catchy musical theatre songs from the likes of Mary Poppins and Phantom Of The Opera; romantic piano music of Chopin which was beautifully played; as well as a plethora of meticulous classical and contemporary pieces.
Each performance was as wonderful as the next, demonstrating a ‘hugely impressive display of talent, musicianship and confidence’, and every performer received a well-earned applause from the audience, who (with students, teachers and families alike) stimulated a very supportive atmosphere.
I spoke to Lily, who performed two enthralling pieces (respectively playing piano and singing) for her feedback on the event: “I found it really enjoyable to hear everyone’s amazing performances and it was also a good experience in performing music. The people in the audience were also really friendly and it was an overall positive experience!”
I also heard from a member of the audience: “No two performances were the same, and so much passion was shown by the students. Time passed so quickly that I didn’t realise the evening came to an end! The performances were so captivating, and I left the room feeling so much joy!”
It is certainly inspiring to see the music department at Parmiter’s pushing students out of their comfort zones to perform at their best, providing opportunities like these.
All in all, the musical evening was a massive success and, as the students’ hard work paid off, the audience were left with an overwhelming sense of elation - a truly memorable recital!
