Starting my first part-time job has been a real eye-opener to the inner workings of the hospitality industry.

Working around food in a busy environment, balancing my shifts with schoolwork as well as interacting with both coworkers and customers has been a really rewarding experience.

Having a job as a young person is more than just a way to earn money- it’s shown me what it is like to be treated like an adult in a professional setting, as well as giving me skills I can apply far beyond the workplace.

In having my first “real” job, it has taught me the responsibility that comes with it.

At work, I am treated as an adult with the same respect given to any other coworker.

Being treated this way has helped me build a sense of initiative and independence as I am able to take charge of my daily tasks, something that has really built on my leadership skills to be used anywhere I go.

The shift in mindset from a school environment to a workplace has encouraged me to take my job seriously as contributing to a team affects everyone and by serving real customers, the stakes are real.

Customer service was the most daunting part of starting work but ultimately the most rewarding!

Being able to interact with customers with a positive attitude and the ability to adapt and problem solve is applicable to all areas of my life, especially adapting with my A-level work and managing my time effectively as well as being able to handle the pressure in such a crucial year.

For any student considering their first job, go for it!

There is nothing more helpful than to have some key skills and improved confidence under your belt before continuing on with university study or straight into a full time job.

A small job really helps you get used to a professional environment, through interacting with customers and enhancing your social skills you will realise what an invaluable tool it is, whatever avenue you choose.
