NEW MALDEN NANDO’S SUFFERS TEMPORARY SETBACK
Nando’s, famous for its chicken which combines a beautiful blend of Portuguese, South African and British cultures, is widely renowned as one of the UK's favourite restaurants. There are nearly 400 Nando’s restaurants in the UK alone, and the restaurant chain holds an estimated value over approximately £1.27 billion as of February 2024.
However, recently, my local Nando’s in New Malden was forced into temporary closure, albeit only for a day, following a suspected water leak which led to overall hygiene concerns. The restaurant plans to reopen on Thursday 31st October, following a one day hiatus from business.
Being a restaurant chain which prides itself on hygiene (the New Malden iteration of which has been awarded a five star hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency), the staff at New Malden’s favourite chicken restaurant took no hesitation in putting business on hold to maintain the integrity of their incredibly high standards.
The restaurant chain was initially established almost 40 years ago, in 1987, by Portuguese born Fernando Duarte, and the South African born Robert Brozin in Johannesburg, South Africa. Now, as of 2024, Nando’s has established restaurants in five continents, with the family favourite first being introduced to the United Kingdom in 1992. Moreover in 2010, Nando’s emerged victorious as the Sunday Times’ “best place to work” in the big companies category.
Furthermore, Nando’s influence on British culture has spread beyond the restraints of their restaurants, with their sauces and marinades being retailed in most British supermarkets.
And on the topic of culture, Nando’s claim to own the largest collection of South African art in the UK. They claim to have over 5,000 works displayed in their restaurants, highlighting the importance of authenticity and the South African cuisine to Nando’s work.
However, one of the biggest reasons behind why Nando’s is a favourite of mine (besides the delicious food and variety of options) is the fact that the restaurant is a clean, welcoming environment. This is due to the extreme measures taken to ensure all Nando’s restaurants are always clean and tidy, and this is exactly why such a drastic precaution was taken by the staff in New Malden Nando’s in closing the restaurant. All associated with Nando’s are passionate about providing the most excellent customer service possible, and a key part of this is maintaining their clean, hygienic restaurants.
At the time of writing, the restaurant is closed, and still undergoing work, however, I’m sure that within no time the restaurant will be open once again, and business will be booming.
