On the 18th of October 2024, Warriors the concept album was released.

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis, it is based on the 1979 film ‘The Warriors’, and the book ‘The Warriors’ written by Sol Yurick.

The story is set in New York City, and centres on the all-female gang ‘The Warriors’, who are framed for the murder of Cyrus – the leader of another prominent gang.

The musical style is a mix of multiple different genres: musical theatre, metal, rap, hip-hop and more.

But what do people think of it?

I spoke to an avid music follower in my local area – Ramsay – to ask what he thought about the new genre-defying album:

What attracted you to the concept album?

R: Having gone to the theatre to watch Hamilton, I really enjoyed the style of the musical and became a fan of its writer Lin-Manuel Miranda. When he announced that he was releasing a concept album of one of my favourite films, and revealed the artists performing on it, I knew that I had to give it a listen. Also, I had never come across any of Eisa Davis's work before, and so was interested to see her influence on the album.

What did you think of the album as a whole?

R: I really enjoyed the style of the album, and hearing all my favourite old hip hop artists that I listened to when I was younger, such as Cam’ron, Nas and Busta Rhymes. There were also quite a few other styles of music, such as metal, that were interesting to listen to.

What was your favourite song on the album, and why?

R: My favourite song is ‘Quiet Girls’, due to its fast pace and style of rapping from the different artists.

Would you like to see the concept album adapted onto the stage?

R: I think that would be a great idea! I’d love to see all of the different characters and their personalities performed on the stage. I think that it could become a very enjoyable musical to watch, and I would love to go see it!

Who would you recommend the album to?

R: I think the album would be enjoyed by a wide range of people, ranging from Hamilton fans to hip hop fans to fans of the original film. The styles of music are so diverse, which opens up its appeal to most audiences around the globe.
