Old motors. Car enthusiast or not, the oddly admirable antiquity of old motors is something to be wowed at, something to appreciate and respect. Every year these feelings are inspired from London to Brighton, thanks to RM Sothebys’ Veteran Car Run.
Every year since 1896, after the speed restriction on ‘light locomotives’ was increased from 4 mph to 14 mph, hundreds of ancient, venerable cars are displayed to the public in a celebratory procession.
This remarkable race will take place this year on Sunday the 3rd November, beginning at Hyde Park and ending in Brighton, and it provides an opportunity for people of all ages to witness a magnificent reminder of the past and its beautiful successes.
Old or young, car-head or not, seeing these antique motors advance on their journey is an unforgettable experience, a short glimpse of a past age - personally, I remember in clear detail seeing the cars with my late grandfather at the end of his road in Purley, one of the many towns that the cars pass through on their way to Brighton.
It really is worth bringing friends or family to see the Veteran Car Run, as it creates such valued memories that myself and countless others possess to this day years in the future. Details of the exact path of the cars can be found on RM Sothebys’ website, and seeing as they pass through Streatham, Croydon, Redhill, Gatwick, Crawley and more, they could indeed be near you!
Don’t deprive your loved ones of such a spectacle, no matter their age - go and see the Veteran Car Rally this Sunday!
