Hairspray is an eight-time Tony award winning musical, packed full of bright costumes, dazzling ensemble dances, and 1960s R’n’B music. Based on John Water’s 1988 film of the same name, the story follows Tracy Turnblad as she fulfills her dream of becoming a dancer on the local TV dance program The Corny Collins Show. The teenager becomes an overnight sensation, leading to social change as she fights to prove that plus-size dancers, such as herself, belong on TV and campaigns for the show’s racial integration.
The musical is currently on tour in the UK, and last week I was lucky enough to attend the show in my local theatre. From the outset, Marc Shaiman’s joyful score is instantly infectious, beginning with the first notes of ‘Good Morning Baltimore’ to the end of the high-octane ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’.
The performances leave nothing to be desired either. As far as singing goes, Michelle Ndegwa undoubtedly steals the show as Motormouth Maybelle. Her show-stopping gospel song ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’ is a firm reality check after an hour of song, dance, and witty jokes, reminding the audience of the musical’s core message about the importance of equality and integration.
“Seeing Hairspray at the New Wimbledon Theatre was so much fun,” said Maria Kauzova, who attended the show with me. “Despite its lighthearted tone, the show did a great job of addressing racism and fatphobia in the 1960’s and spreading a message of social acceptance throughout, ending the show on an emotional high that could be felt throughout the audience.”
Hairspray the Musical played at the New Wimbledon Theatre from 21st to 26th October. The tour will continue across the UK until mid-April next year.
