The Newdigate Brickworks, a former claypit which is now a tranquil nature reserve, is an absolute must to visit for any lover of the countryside and nature.
Nestled in the heart of this beautiful village it has long been a treasured spot for local families, dog walkers and anglers.
Managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust, the 43 acre site consists of two main lakes, a vast grassland area and seemingly endless woodland.
The main lake is a haven for anglers who come to enjoy the calm waters and shady spots that attract carp of various sizes. The designated spots all around the lake provides the perfect place for them to set up their equipment and then relax in a peaceful setting.
If you are looking to explore nature instead, then look no further. The reserve is a haven for a wide variety of birds, fish, mammals and amphibians.
An amazing total of 188 plants have been identified, including 17 ancient woodland indicator species.
Topsoil from the clay pit was spread around to encourage a large variety of plants to grow, including Canadian goldenrod, knapweed, rosebay willowherb and oxeye daisies.
In recent years the numerous paths around the lake have suffered from overgrowth and have fallen into disrepair, prompting a much-needed intervention from the Surrey Wildlife Trust.
Over the past few weeks the Trust, along with volunteers from the local community, have done a fantastic job, upgrading the pathways for walkers to continue to enjoy.
Local well behaved dogs are regularly spotted enjoying their daily walks around the main lake and for the brave there is a special spot, where it is safe for dogs to walk into the water for a swim or to retrieve their favourite toy and then exit the water safely without annoying the anglers or disturbing the wildlife.
On a lovely summer’s day or a frosty winter morning, this reserve will not disappoint!
