The art of crocheting dates back centuries ago. While it is unknown, when exactly crochet came about, stitches from ancient patterns suggest crocheting became quite big around the 1800s.
Typically, wool work using needles and hooks, has been deemed as a 'granny thing to do'.
However, in recent years, crochet has become increasingly popular amongst the young generation too.
“I started crocheting almost three years ago” says Iman, aged 14.
“I really enjoy knitting, and when I found out about crochet, I thought it would be a nice thing to try”.
Iman was completely unaware, that her sparking curiosity in crochet would grow bigger, and that crochet would even become one of her favourite hobbies.
“I crochet whenever I have time now” she says.
“Its a good way to unwind, and it's an easy skill to pick up”.
Crochet is no longer done solely for the purpose of making something, like in the past.
It is thought of, as a relaxing activity, allowing individuals to embrace their inner creativity.
The specific patterns and stitches used in crochet, demand excellent focus, perseverance, and determination.
With all crochet projects only involving the use of a hook and one’s fingers, crocheting allows individuals to gain manual dexterity – looked highly upon in the medical field.
Now with the help of Internet and other online platforms, crocheting has become much easier to learn.
There are numerous videos, tutorials and online pages, available for those keen on learning the skill.
“My advice for beginners would be to keep practicing, and if following a pattern isn't helping, there are lots of YouTube tutorials which can help you” says Iman, who is now a confident crocheter.
After having practiced various stitches and techniques, Iman is able to crochet captivating creations, from adorable apples to perfect pizza slices.
With the world rapidly changing, who knows what crochet may bring to you.
