Thomas Tuchel: does it matter that the England manager isn't English?
It has recently been confirmed that Thomas Tuchel will become the new Head Coach of England Football Team, however this has caused an abundance of controversy around the globe.
Thomas Tuchel is from Germany and as a highly rated head coach has won 12 titles in his senior managerial career including the Champions League and the World’s Best Club Coach.
He has managed many historical and successful clubs such as Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain and many more. As he is a German, there has been much criticism towards the FA Committee for their recruit.
The FA thinks now is the time to win a trophy, given the talented group of players in what is arguably the best squad England have had since the 1966 World Cup winning squad.
They think Tuchel is the right man to take the team one step further to ultimate victory.
Tuchel’s view on the controversy is that it doesn't matter what country is on your passport, it's about winning football matches and titles.
Many pundits praise his enthusiasm and confidence with the players and his inimitable humour and warm charm.
The players, led by England Captain, Harry Kane, all seem excited to play under him.
The Guardian’s Chief Sports Writer, Barney Ronay explains how whilst International Football should be a display of a country’s organisation and set-up, that ‘English football doesn’t produce coaches, it’s been deeply anti-intellectual for 120 years. It doesn’t have a style, still doesn’t have a coaching structure.’
England’s desperation for a quality foreign manager is significant.
Barney discusses Tuchel ‘representing outside expertise bought for a price to give a show’ and suggests that sometimes Tuchel will lose his cool but that’s his personality and that is what makes him the victorious manager he is.
The football rivalry between England and Germany, however, runs deep, all the way back to when England won their last trophy in the World Cup Final against West Germany almost 60 years ago.
Sentiment has shown that some would rather lose a World Cup final with an English manager than win with a foreign manager, highlighting that decision lacks English pride.
Others go further citing the history of the past wars, aghast that England would need German help to win titles.
Whilst it is thought that an England manager should be of English descent, there was in reality a small field to choose from.
Tuchel will, in response, cite his deep connection with England being beyond football. However, if England go all the way and Tuchel leads them to victory, just how much the fans care will remain to be seen.
