Despite steering clear of the rest of the Marvel universe, the Venom trilogy has become a fan favourite as of late due to the goofy partnership between Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his symbiote buddy, Venom.
Continuing in the vein of the previous two films, the third and final instalment in this series provides plenty of the absurd entertainment viewers have grown familiar with, from the mental bickering between Eddie and his partner, to the copious amounts of head-biting throughout the film.
Following a short-lived trip across the multiverse, Eddie is thrust back to his own world where he discovers that he is wanted, not only by the government as a result of his actions in the previous film, but also by an extraterrestrial hunter, hell-bent on retrieving a mysterious “codex” to release an old enemy of the symbiotes.
Despite its 1 hour and 50-minute length, the film is packed full of action, flashing between pyrotechnic fight scenes and symbiotic acrobatic sequences in a Marvel-esque theatrical spectacle
Unfortunately, this does give the film a somewhat rushed feel, with the fast-paced plot perhaps lacking coherency and continuity and with some scenes and themes being left seemingly underdeveloped; this does leave the story slightly wanting in terms of a clear motive or drive although given the inherently comedic nature of the film, this doesn’t detract a huge amount.
Despite this, viewers are treated to another standout performance from Hardy, vying for his best in this series, displaying a full and compelling range of emotion in what is a fitting finale to this much-loved franchise.
