Local teenager discusses the GCSE exam period

Local teenager Zara V (16) discussed how she found the 2024 GCSE exam period, and some of her top tips and advice to help the exams go smoothly.

What was the hardest subject to revise for?

Zara: Personally, I found maths the hardest to revise for, as there isn’t a huge amount of direct content to remember, you mainly need to know how to apply your knowledge to questions, so a different technique is used compared to when revising for other subjects.

What revision methods did you find particularly effective?

Zara: For most of my subjects I would make flashcards on Quizlet to help memorise content, and then would practice applying my knowledge through past paper questions.

I also found having a whiteboard helpful when making quick notes on videos.

What revision methods did you find least effective?

Zara: I didn’t find just reading notes or textbooks that effective, as I don’t think it engaged my brain well.

In order for the information to go in, I would have to make notes on whatever I was reading or test myself as I read along.

When did you find it hardest to revise?

Zara: Usually just after lunch, so I would have a break around then because I knew any work I did then wouldn’t be as effective compared to other times during the day.

Do you have any non-work-related tips which helped you during the exam season?

Zara: Id say its important to get a good sleep. There is no point revising late into the night, as you’ll struggle to remember and apply information correctly if you are tired.

Its also important to stay hydrated and eat well enough, as being hungry or dehydrated in an exam will not help your focus.

Goodluck to everyone that has an exam coming up soon, hopefully by following Zara's advice you will leave your exams happy.
