Owning a dog doesn’t come without its problems.

It needs money, time, and a sitter when you're on holiday.

So the question is, what makes caring for this wild, energetic creature worth it?

In this article I’ll try to shed light on the hidden benefits of furry friends, but more importantly, why are dog owners so happy?

Last Sunday, in Dundonald Park (a regular haunt for local dog walkers) I talked to various owners to find out what makes owning a canine so special.

They described to me how their dog has brought them many health benefits, mentally as well as physically, and that their loving, loyal presence has always been a comfort in difficult moments in life.

One of the many things mentioned was that their amount of daily exercise had increased massively.

After all, most dogs require at least two walks a day, and many dog owners said that this forced them to keep fit and spend more time in nature, no matter the weather.

Other than getting your steps up, this also helps you maintain a healthy heart and remain active through old age.

Many also acknowledged that having a pet has made them more aware and helped them live in the moment, rather than getting lost in the digital world.

It is widely known that pets can lower stress levels and increase general happiness.

Especially for adults living alone, having another living creature love and rely on you can reduce loneliness and bring purpose and responsibility into your life.

The dog owners I talked to confirmed this by saying that the enthusiastic greeting and unconditional love of their canine always made them smile after a long day of work.

Rebecca Jane Garside, local dog owner, states that ‘I feel wanted and loved and valued and needed'.

Others, when questioned, admitted that their pet had helped them widen social circles and create lasting connections with friends they wouldn’t have met otherwise.

A stranger you start chatting to as your dog runs around might just turn out to be an important presence in your life for many years to come.

Not only this, but many people expressed that their dog has made a big impact on their kids and their mental health.

Especially for an only child, a pet can be there for comfort and amusement in a way that parents can’t be through hard times in life.

Mark Hein stated that 'after having the dog for six months, it brought nothing but joy and stability to my daughter, and has given her something else to focus on other than the negatives of moving to a new country’

Having a pet isn’t just about the joy it brings you; it’s about putting time and effort into another living creature and having the satisfaction of knowing that your work is the best reward possible.
